Private Attorney, Legal Aid Join Forces on Reverse Mortgage Cases

A combined effort between legal aid agencies and a volunteer lawyer to help clients facing reverse mortgage foreclosures may be providing a blueprint to help reverse financial constraints faced by legal aid offices. Palm City attorney Paul Regensdorf has worked with Coast to Coast Legal Services of South Florida and Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, among others, in a joint effort that, using state law on fee awards, can generate fees for both the volunteer lawyer and the legal aid offices.

Eviction filings consistent despite new moratorium on evictions

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a steady impact on the finances of families across the First Coast, and despite vaccinations making it possible for more businesses to reopen, the number of landlords filing for court-ordered evictions remains high. "There have been a consistent level of filings," said Suzanne Garrow, an attorney with the Jacksonville Area Legal Aid office who works with renters facing eviction.

Rodent-plagued residents take their fight to court

JALA files lawsuit  against Hilltop Apartments. This lawsuit, led by JALA, seeks a court order forcing the landlord to cure the infestation and provide temporary housing until the problems are resolved.  JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tenants at Hilltop Village Apartments, a government-subsidized complex in Northwest Jacksonville that have been reporting problems with rodents for the past year have now asked a judge to force the owner to move them until the mice infestation is fixed.

CDC eviction moratorium ends June 30: Here’s where to get help

Right now hundreds of people are facing eviction in Duval County. According to the Duval County Clerk of Courts Office, more than 450 evictions were filed in May, which is down from 940 in January. An estimated one in five renters are behind on payments. If you are being faced with an eviction lawsuit, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid has an online tool to help you create a legal response.

Veterans achieves legal ownership of inherited property with help from JALA

Rodney came to JALA’s Clay County office seeking help with probate on an estate he had inherited. Since he was a veteran, he was referred to JALA’s Veterans Services Unit. Declan Duffy, who leads the unit, drafted two separate petitions and three corresponding orders and filed each of them with the Clay County Clerk of Courts. These included an order to admit the will and one for homestead status on the family home.

One day, “Anais,” who lived in a subsidized apartment with her 14-year-old son, noticed severe mold and mildew in the living room air vents of her apartment. Soon, the infestation had spread throughout the unit. Anais has an autoimmune disease, and after the mold was discovered, her doctor diagnosed her with respiratory ailments that required treatment and medication.

JALA helps mother of teenagers with disabilities secure adequate housing

“Marta” has two teenagers whose medical disabilities require such substantial medical equipment that the family needs a three-bedroom apartment on the first floor. She had been on the public housing wait list for more than two years, and when she was finally offered a three-bedroom apartment, the offer was soon retracted. She was then offered a two-bedroom apartment that would not meet her family’s needs.
