Dr. Paul Pitel of Nemours Children’s Specialty Care to be honored by JALA

Dr. Paul Pitel, who is retiring as longtime chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Nemours Children's Specialty Care in Jacksonville, will be honored by Jacksonville Area Legal Aid during its Bridges to Justice for Children’s Health virtual event, which will be broadcast Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. on JALA’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JaxLegalAid.

Guardian Advocacy Project offers help for families

When a child turns 18, the child’s parents or legal guardians no longer have the legal authority to make decisions on behalf of the person. For people with a developmental disability, assistance with some matters, such as medical and financial decisions, often is needed beyond the age of 18. The guardian advocacy process helps those parents or legal guardians obtain legal authority to continue caring for their disabled family member. Many families are in need of help with this process and are unable to afford an attorney.

Medical, legal and business leaders to co-chair Freed to Run 4.0

Having raised more than $1 million in its first three years, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s largest fundraiser, Freed to Run, is going the distance toward its $2.25 million goal under the leadership of four newly appointed event co-chairs: Dr. Nayla Osman-Chahlavi, pediatrician at Village Pediatrics; Dr. Ali Chahlavi, neurosurgeon at St. Vincent’s Medical Center; Richard Fannin, financial advisor with Wells Fargo advisors; and retired Fourth Judicial Circuit Judge Hugh Carithers. The group will work to attract more sponsors and relay teams, with the Chahlavis focusing on the health-care community, Fannin on the business community, and Carithers on the legal community and related industries.

Foreclosure lawsuit against older veteran dismissed thanks to JALA

“Henry,” a 70-year-old veteran, found himself facing a foreclosure lawsuit. Intimidated by the legal process and still grieving after the lengthy illness and death of his wife, he failed to respond to the court and eventually turned to JALA for assistance after a foreclosure judgment had been entered.
