My name is Robert “Doc” Hernandez, and I have proudly served as a Veteran of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans Service Officer for nearly twenty‑three years. In that time, I have worked with thousands of Veterans across Northeast Florida, many of whom come to me during some of the most difficult and uncertain moments of their lives. One constant throughout my decades of service has been the unwavering support of Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA).
Whenever a Veteran approaches me with a legal question, I make it my responsibility to ensure they are never left without guidance. I sit with them, listen to their concerns, and walk through the issue step by step. More often than not, that path leads us to JALA. Whether we call together or I provide their direct contact information, I know that when a Veteran reaches JALA, they will be treated with dignity, compassion, and professionalism.
JALA has been a true guardian angel for Veterans and their families throughout Northeast Florida. They do not wait for Veterans to find them—they go where Veterans already are. Their legal clinics are held at City Hall, public libraries, the VA Clinic, community centers, and any place a Veteran may walk through the door. This outreach ensures that legal help is not only available but accessible to every Veteran who needs it.
The issues JALA assists with are often life‑changing. Veterans rely on them for help with discharge upgrades, housing challenges, divorce (with or without children), child support modifications, custody and time‑sharing matters, and bankruptcy. These are complex, stressful situations that can overwhelm even the strongest among us. Yet JALA steps in with expertise and unwavering dedication—and they do it all pro bono. Their commitment to serving those who served our nation is unmatched.
JALA’s impact extends beyond legal services. They support food banks, clothes closets, and other essential community resources that help stabilize Veterans and families in crisis. At civic events across Northeast Florida, you don’t have to look hard to find JALA. They are present, engaged, and always ready to serve.
