Emily Taylor-Hernandez, a pre-law student at Syracuse University, has been selected to serve as the JWLA Kathy Para Student Intern this summer in the Family Law & Victim Advocacy Unit at Jacksonville Area Legal Aid.

A resident of Fleming Island, Taylor-Hernandez is majoring in forensic Science and psychology, and she is a member of the Kappa Alpha Pi Pre-Law and Pre-Government Professional Fraternity, the Psi Chi National Honor Society, and the Pre-Law Society, among other student organizations. She was the recipient of the Community Service Award at Episcopal School of Jacksonville, and she said more than 600 hours of volunteer work has shaped her perspective.

“Volunteering has not only taught me how rewarding service can be but how I can use my voice to advocate for others” she said.

Since 2018, JWLA has sponsored a paid summer internship program through JALA to promote access to justice, provide substantive legal experience for JWLA’s student membership, and foster a lifelong dedication to pro bono.

The internship offers critical legal experience and support for needed legal services in our local community.

“JWLA  is proud to continue the tradition of sponsoring a paid JALA internship and wishes the intern continued success in this valuable opportunity,” said JWLA President Kathryn E. Stanfill. “Providing paid legal aid internship is important to ensure the next generation understands the value of public interest work and remains committed to serving and strengthening the community through legal aid.”

JALA President and CEO Jim Kowalski said JALA is fortunate to have Taylor-Hernandez for the summer.

“We will keep her busy, and we know she will make a big contribution to the Family Law & Victim Advocacy Unit,” Kowalski said. “Our JWLA interns are always a big help.”
