Community Counsel

  • Free Legal Assistance for Community-Based Non-Profit Groups regarding corporate, tax, real estate, zoning, and employment issues.
  • Information Clearinghouse regarding governmental programs, grant sources and providers of technical assistance for non-profit groups which want to pursue community economic development ventures.
  • Education and support for client groups through Board of Directors training and informational hand-outs.

Community Counsel is a free legal and technical assistance program provided as a community service by Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, (a non-profit civil legal services agency).

The mission of our program is to provide direct client assistance to community-based organizations and other not-for-profit corporations which are dedicated to the revitalization of blighted neighborhoods, the provision of decent, affordable housing, and the targeting of increased private and government funding and services to low and moderate income residents of Northeast Florida.

The applicant group must lack the financial resources to retain a private attorney in order to qualify for the free services of Community Counsel.

One staff attorney and volunteer attorneys are available to assist eligible groups. Community Counsel gives priority to community-based organizations that:

  • Have low-income Board members; and
  • Have development projects in a low-income neighborhood or that benefit low and moderate income residents.

Other groups and projects will be considered if resources are available. For further information, contact attorney Carol Miller at 356-8371, Ext. 332.
