If you have been denied credit based in the last 60 upon a credit report from one of these companies you have the right to request a free credit report from that company. If not, they are usually $8.50.

Be careful about having too many potential creditors pull your report. This can have a negative effect on your credit rating. This leaves an impression that you are having trouble getting credit.

If there is an error on your credit report or if a debt is listed that is not yours or one for which there has been no activity within the last 7 years (such as a payment), you should write the credit reporting agency and dispute the debt explaining why it should be deleted. The company has 30 days to respond. Also, if you have a negative credit entry, such as a joint debt that was court-ordered to be paid by a former spouse, you have the right to demand that the credit reporting agency place your short statement explaining the negative credit. You can contact the credit reporting agency by telephone, however, if you are disputing an entry or requesting a statement of explanation you should follow up in writing. The letter should be sent certified mail, return receipt requested.

TAXES

Free Tax Preparation Software for Lower income taxpayers
Once again Quicken is allowing what it calls "Low income taxpayers" (those with an income of $25,000 or less) to use its Turbo Tax for the Web for free. It can be accessed only on the Internet.

I have used this software and it is very easy to use. It allows the taxpayer to file tax returns electronically and get any refund directly deposited to a bank account within 2 weeks. It calculates the Earned Income Tax and Child Tax Credits automatically.
